However, it is by no means necessary to use this type of subterfuge to approach underwater fauna and this, particularly in free diving. Indeed, with a little experience and patience, it is possible to observe fish very closely in their natural habitat, without disturbing them and sometimes even, without them seeing you or feeling your presence (in so far as you present yourself front of the current). With that, I am deeply convinced that it is in the approach of fish and its strategies that resides the largest advantage of underwater photography in free diving, compared to scuba diving. When the presence of a scuba diver will quickly be betrayed by the noise of his regulator or those of the divers who are accompanying him, the free diver evolves in silence.  But for that, still is necessary to master some techniques. For this reason, the strategies of approaching fish developed by spearfishermen appear to me a great interest. To learn these techniques which are the ambush, etc. I can direct you towards the specialized works and sites.
Approaching fish In order to see fish up closer, certain people, by facility, attract them with food which they find on the spot or which they carry with them. This practice generally call “feeding” is  in my mind totally reprehensible, not only because it interferes with the food chain where the mans food does not have its place, but also because it tends, for fish, to associate human beings with food.
Observation I am convinced that the quality of an underwater meeting and by extension, of a photograph, is related to the will to take time to experience this meeting. The time of an observation, generally reciprocal, of an adjustment to the reactions of the other. What then implies keeping a very large margin when one goes down and it is for that also, in my mind, it is not necessary to seek to reach great depths. Essence being to know well ones limits and never to withdraw oneself from the elementary rules of safety
The agencies that organize day outings (snorkeling trips) on the edges of coral reefs often have this annoying practice to hold the remains of lunch to attract a multitude of fish. It is then enough to explore the reefs where this practice takes place to quickly finding oneself solicited by an impressive number of fish, often sergeant majors, who, rid of their natural apprehensions, hastens you to give them pittance, going to the lengths of nibbling at your skin for that.

Certain diving centers organize “shark feeding” and this activity seems to attract a growing number of divers enthusiasts for big thrills. It is worth totally avoiding those places and not be astonished when certain sharks used to this practice and considered placid hitherto, like the nurse shark,  are now responsible for some leg bites.
