National maritime park, the Perhentians islands represent a sanctuary for a great number of species, in particular the green tortoises. Those are sometimes found where several of them regroup on a few square meters of beach to bury their eggs during the night there. These eggs will have very little chance to give life to a tortoise which could reach adulthood since well before their are many predators which watch for the new born ones when they awake. There are those Malaysian men, who for ages have dug up the eggs to eat them or resell them on the markets. (Tradition in question?). I was lucky to observe a green tortoise (photographs below) at the time of its night laying. This one lasted approximately 4 hours (from 3h30 to 7h30 in the morning), 4 hours of baying, of pain, of exhaustion. Exhaustion exacerbated by the difficulty of digging a sufficiently deep hole at the foot of a coconut tree for which it was then necessary to unearth the roots.
